dance class and back: scoliosis.
I am not a medical professional. This view is based on my own experiences. If you see yourself reflected in what I say, seek medical advice.
Alprya asks me comments if I think belly dancing improves or aggravates back problems.
What we call normal "back problems" are almost always deviations. The deviations can be divided into left-right, which if you look from behind the straight line becomes a C, a), or S. All are called "scoliosis." It can have many causes, but circumstances are usually repeated poor posture and Sedentary life. For simplicity, if you're a sedentary child, muscles and tendons of the trunk "give" in one way or another, and not supporting the spine in place.
In theory, any symmetric exercise may help strengthen the back. It is always recommended swimming, and racquet sports discouraged and any sport in which the dominant side (right for righties) has a strong tendency to work harder than the other. So I think swimming is recommended, because they swim with one side over another.
With many types of dances, especially in a classroom, that symmetry is maintained. Not common in Bollywood, Bollywood choreographies show oriented and do not usually make the first move it right and then left. But in most kinds of dance is going to do the same amount of movement to one side then the other.
If a dance in which work the arms (flamenco, oriental), maintain arms in a good posture will give you strength in the upper back. The movements involve your abs will give strength to the front of the trunk.
In short, belly dancing seems like a good way to control or improve scoliosis. Strengthens the back and corrects poor posture.
